Marvin Makes Music

TITLE: Marvin Makes Music
AUTHOR: Marvin Hamlisch
ILLUSTRATOR: Jim Madsen
PUBLISHER: Dial Books for Young Readers
COPYRIGHT: 2012

Marvin loves to play the piano but he does not like playing pieces by funny named composers like Wolfgang or Ludwig.  He has an audition for the Julliard School.  On the day of the audition, he and his Dad explore on the roof of the building while they are waiting.  They get locked out.  Will Marvin make it to his audition in time?  Will his nerves keep him from performing to the best of his ability?

This is a true life story of composer Marvin Hamlisch.

I thought this was an interesting story and the illustrations make the book come alive.  The book is AR level 3.6.

Trumpets

TITLE: Trumpets
AUTHOR: Cynthia Amoroso and Robert B. Noyed
ILLUSTRATOR: various photographers
PUBLISHER: The Child's World
COPYRIGHT: 2010

We have read several books from this "Music Makers" series. Each one tells about one instrument. It has facts about the instrument, how it's played, and a brief history of the instrument. I like that the reading level is appropriate for beginning readers. Another thing I like about this series is the photographs that fill every other page.

My son and I have enjoyed reading the various books in this series.
